HRW: Over 1,200 Killed in Haiti Drone Strikes Targeting Gangs
According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), Haiti’s security forces and private security companies, including those affiliated with the founder of the infamous security firm Blackwater, Erik Prince, have carried out drone strikes that have resulted in the killing of at least 1,243 people in less than a year. Although the drone strikes are aimed at combating the criminal gangs that control 90% of Haiti’s capital, they have resulted in the killing of dozens of civilians, including 17 children. However, the drone strikes have been criticized by HRW and the UN as they are often conducted by a specialized task force without the presence of police. In related news, as the violence in Haiti persists, a federal court in Florida is starting the trial of four suspects who are accused of plotting the assassination of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.
